Eventually every new golfer is going to want to buy their own set of clubs. There are very few golf courses left that will let you share a bag of clubs with someone because of the way it slows down play, and there’s really just nothing like having your own clubs to care for and use when you’re out for 18 holes. But should you spring the money for an expensive used set of golf clubs, or would you be better off buying used? It’s a decision that a beginner golfer is usually going to agonize over, but you should pretty much never buy a new set of golf clubs if you’re just in the learning phase. One of the most important factors in choosing clubs is choosing clubs that are right for you, and help you compensate for the specific flaws in your swing and stance. In an early stage of the game where you’re still learning what those flaws are, you’re not going to know what that is yet. It is far better for you (and your pocketbook) to buy a good set of used clubs.
Because you want your clubs to match your swing and body mechanics, the best way to make your decision on which set to get is to physically pick them up and feel them in your hands, give them a few practice swings. At this point you cn also rely on the advice of your friends or acquaintances who play golf, perhaps someone at the shop where you’re searching. They may not know which clubs will work the best for you, but they’ll be able to explain to you a lot of the things you may be unfamiliar with, like the range that is typical for each club, the difference between an iron and a wood, and what clubs you need at a minimum to have a playable set.
Another excellent source of information is to read different reviews of the various brands and types of golf clubs. This won’t tell you how they feel in your hands, but you’ll be able to get information on durability, whether you’re getting a fair price, and what other people have thought of the clubs. Reviews are an excellent way to learn the differences between the brands, and knowing when you’re getting a good deal on your money.
Used golf clubs are the best way for the beginning golfer to get into the game and finally own their first set of clubs. Just make sure to pick the ones that are right for you, and you’ll be on the green and trying for birdies in no time.
